I'm Jo, and I Make Things.

I do my best work from my Atlanta home office where I’m surrounded by my kid’s finger paintings.

(The big green spidery one’s my favorite.)

Instructional Design

I do soup-to-nuts instructional design—I research topics, create a scope and sequence along with subject matter experts, write copy, and build interactions and graphics to support instruction. No matter the topic, these principles always apply: content should be clear, sticky, and tailored to learners’ needs.

Here’s an overview of how I applied the ADDIE model of instructional design to a specific ID project.

Project Management

My leadership experience is what makes me a great project manager. I know that managing projects isn’t only about making sure milestones are met and the work gets done (though it is about that), but it’s also about making sure the process of getting it done works well for everyone involved. No matter the context nor the tools and methodologies we employ, I prioritize and excel at motivating and guiding a group of individuals to coalesce into a team and focus on a common goal.

Here’s a high-level project plan I created for a team’s transition to a new LMS.

wrIting & editing

I wield words like whoa. I’ve done a lot of written communications work for both internal and external audiences. I’ve managed blogs, crafted email newsletters, written grant applications, designed and edited websites, authored a newspaper column, and more. I have a knack for making complicated, technical, or wonky information clear and concise and useful for any audience.

About Me

I make words and design work for people. I lead small teams and tackle big projects. I build systems that work and retool ones that don't. Most of all, I help people make and do good things.

I write public health communications at a cause-driven creative agency. Before this, I designed mobile-first educational content at an edtech company. Before that, I did communications at a national nonprofit that fights for better, more equitable public K-12 education. And before that, I led an organization and helped design an award-winning program that runs free writing workshops at public middle schools and was recognized by First Lady Michelle Obama. And I got my start leading teams as a logistics officer in the US Army for five years. All along the way, I’ve been making things and writing things.
